From producer Peter Jackson (King Kong, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) comes the critically-acclaimed sci-fi thriller District 9, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD on the 28th December, 2009 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Director Neill Blomkamp (Crossing the Line, Tempbot) enlists a cast of relative newcomers, including Sharlto Copley and Jason Cope (Doomsday), and a host of groundbreaking special effects for the enthralling allegorical story of aliens stranded in South Africa.

Bonus materials on the Blu-ray™ and DVD include commentary with Director/Co-Writer Neill Blomkamp, deleted scenes and the three-part documentary “The Alien Agenda: A Filmmaker's Log.” The first part of the documentary explores the pre-production process and creation of the world of District 9, Peter Jackson’s role in producing the film, and the unorthodox approach to using South Africa as the setting for this film. The second part delves into the shooting style of the film utilizing small handheld cameras to tell the tale, the difficulties of shooting in Johannesburg, the challenges of shooting scenes that would include visual effects later in the process, and the overall challenges encountered during the production process. The third chapter of the documentary investigates the task of designing and editing the film's sound effects, and the general challenges encountered during the editing process.

The Blu-ray versions also exclusively features four featurettes: “Metamorphosis: The Transformation of Wikus” looks at the practical effects employed by filmmaker Blomkamp and the artists at WETA to create Wikus’ metamorphosis into an alien; “Innovation: The Acting and Improvisation of District 9” shows Blomkamp’s direction of the actors, his encouragement of improvisation, and the actors’ process for working together under these guidelines; “Conception and Design: Creating the World of District 9” depicts the amazing design and theory behind the world of District 9, including Alien Design, Alien Technology, Space Travel, MNU and The First Reaction Force Battalion; and “Alien Generation: The Visual Effects of District 9” offers an in-depth look at the process of shooting visual effects scenes and incorporating CGI aliens realistically into the scenes in post-production.

Bonus features exclusive to the Blu-ray Disc™ include the Interactive Map feature “Joburg from Above: Satellite and Schematics of the World of District 9,” that allows users to explore alien technology and weaponry, MNU mercenary armory, and more from the film through a series of satellite maps, schematics and photo-real files.

The Blu-ray Disc also exclusively features movieIQ—which allows viewers to immediately access continuously updated information on the cast & crew and explore relevant trivia such as production facts, music and soundtrack information all tied to scenes within the movie via BD-Live™—and cinechat, where viewers can send on-screen instant messages to their friends while watching the movie.

DVD Review Up (2009)

BALLOON BOY Ed Asner gets a lift as Up\'s grumpy hero Up
It's getting a bit repetitive saying ''Pixar has done it again.'' But here goes: Pixar has done it again. The 10th film off the animation powerhouse's assembly line, Up is a lighter-than-air fable about a crotchety old widower (Ed Asner in gruff Lou Grant mode) who floats to South America in a rickety house tethered to thousands of balloons, with a chubby little stowaway along for the ride. Like most Pixar features, the setup is the best part. But really, that's splitting hairs — the entire movie's a gem. EXTRAS include a wonderfully nerdy commentary from directors Pete Docter and Bob Peterson, and a new original short starring Dug, Up's lovably dumb mutt. A-

DVD Review Star Trek (2009)

RISKY ENTERPRISE? Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine head up the Star Trek relaunch Star Trek, Chris Pine, ...
Rebooting the mothballed Star Trek franchise was never the no-win scenario (''Kobayashi Maru,'' for the nerd herd) that J.J. Abrams & Co. describe on this two-disc set's back-patting commentary. After all, fans already ate up Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Still, Abrams' turn at the helm of the Enterprise is a triumph. Star Trek is exciting, the cast is terrific, and the cameo by Leonard Nimoy is done with both love and smarts. If there's a nit to pick, it's Eric Bana's villain, Nero. He's no Khan. A bounty of EXTRAS includes outtakes and cool deleted scenes like Spock's birth. The only thing missing is a drool bib. A-

X-Men Origins - Wolverine - DVD

The gruff, adamantium-clawed Marvel superhero Wolverine strikes out on his own in this X-Men spin-off starring series regular Hugh Jackman. The story gets under way as the boy who will become Wolverine makes a shocking discovery about his family bloodline, and gains a brother in the process. Flash forward to find the mutant siblings battling side by side through two world wars and Vietnam -- where they are sentenced to death for killing a commanding officer -- and Logan (Hugh Jackman) and his brother, Victor Creed (aka Sabretooth, played by Liev Schreiber), have joined a top-secret government task force. When their targets begin to include innocent civilians, conscientious Logan escapes to the Canadian Rockies, where he builds a home with pretty schoolteacher Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins). Informed by his old commanding officer William Stryker (Danny Huston) that the members of his old team are being targeted for death, Logan is heartbroken when Victor finds and kills Kayla. Vowing revenge, Logan agrees to take part in a dangerous experiment that will fuse his bones with a powerful metal alloy called adamantium, which makes him virtually indestructible and gives him the strength needed to defeat his powerful brother. Subsequently betrayed by Stryker, Logan (now Wolverine) sets out to find his blood-lusting brother and stop the cycle of violence once and for all. Along the way, the temperamental hero is joined by fellow mutants John Wraith (Will.i.Am) and Remy LeBeau (aka Gambit, played by Taylor Kitsch). But before Wolverine can seek vengeance against Striker and his brother, he'll have to do battle with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) a formidable mutant instilled with many powers. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
