Early estimates for Friday show Avatar back on top yet again, adding another $9 million to its cumulative haul. Legion, from Sony’s Screen Gems division, performed best of the new releases, with the sci-fi thriller starring Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid scoring an estimated $6.7 million for the day. Third place belonged to holdover The Book of Eli, which grossed close to $5 million in its second Friday in theaters. And it doesn’t look like kids are buying The Rock as The Tooth Fairy. The PG-rated comedy starring Dwayne Johnson earned only $3.4 million on its opening day for a fourth place slot. Number five belonged to The Lovely Bones, which garnered an additional $2.6 million for the day.

Meanwhile, CBS Films looks like its going to be asking for a do-over on their debut film from the new company. Extraordinary Measures, with Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser, landed in the sixth slot with only $2 million for the day. Check back tomorrow for a full weekend report.

loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-12764454579364005862010-01-24T01:01:00.002-08:002010-01-24T01:02:16.391-08:00Thumbs Up For 2 Sundance DocumentariesWhile Sundance buyers try to hook Catfish, two other docus that came with distributors unveil today and tomorrow, and I found them great viewing. Alex Gibney has a 6 PM premiere today for the competition entry Casino Jack And The United States Of Money, about disgraced Washington DC lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Tomorrow, PR mogul-turned-filmmaker Dan Klores unveils Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. the New York Knicks, which like Catfish is part of the Documentary Spotlight program.
Gibney -- the Oscar-winning director of Taxi To The Darkside and Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room --gave me an early peek at his docu, which makes a compelling case for campaign finance reform. The film bares outrageous abuses and moral corrosion that transformed Abramoff from GOP true believer to fatcat lobbyist who got rich protecting the interests of Asian slave labor-sweat shop owners, murderous third world “freedom fighters,” Russian gangsters, Indian casino operators, and drug companies. Through Abramoff, pols fed at the money trough until they, too, were brought down by the ensuing scandal.

Abramoff comes across as a colorful but deluded movie-loving rogue who patterned himself as a Jason Bourne-type character but ended up cast as a villain who is serving four years for corruption and fraud. “Jack started with ideals, but at the end of the day, money becomes the moral universe for all these guys," Gibney told me. “Ultimately, you have to take the money out of the political election system, or we’re done as a democracy.”

The only thing missing from Gibney’s superb dissection is an interview with Abramoff himself. Gibney said the rogue gave him plenty of input but the director couldn't get a camera into prison. He blames a rival feature film drama with the same name Casino Jack being made by director George Hickenlooper and starring Kevin Spacey as Abramoff. That film did meet with Abramoff in prison. “Hickenlooper said, 'if only Mr. Gibney had bothered to take the trouble to reach out to Jack', but the fact is I spent a lot of time with him ,” said Gibney, who is bitter about the rival film. "I was upset when they appropriated a title we made public early on, and then they did a title search and pounced anyway. But I’ve produced and edited fiction films, and it's an advantage here to show the real larger-than-life subject. Will Smith is a great actor, but he was not Muhammad Ali, and Spacey is magnificent but he’s no Jack Abramoff.”

In Klores’ hoops documentary, the surprise for me, a longtime Knicks fan, is how funny it is in retrospect. Because it was agony to watch the 1990s rivalry between the Patrick Ewing-led New York Knicks and Reggie Miller’s upstart Indiana Pacers. I saw the film at a screening with a small group of Gotham journalists and the iikes of Knicks legend Earl Monroe and Spike Lee, and the latter steals this film with a display of disarming humor. That almost makes me forgive him for the infamous time his courtside trash talk during a blowout goaded Miller into a super-human 25-point fourth quarter comeback performance that was soul-crushing to any Knicks fan. Also a surprise is how funny Ewing is: during his playing days the only way to get a smile out of the ferocious competitor was to turn him upside down.

Klores smartly traces Miller’s arrogance to an inferiority complex when compared to sister Cheryl, arguably the greatest female player ever. Klores is keeping short the Q-&-A tomorrow so the sports fan audience won't miiss the Jets play the Colts in the AFC Championship game. Miller, now an announcer, will be at the premiere.
loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-34805739696301738902010-01-24T01:01:00.001-08:002010-01-24T01:01:42.265-08:00#1 'Avatar' Holds On For 6th Weekend; 'Legion' #2 And The Rock's 'Tooth Fairy' #4; Les Moonves' First CBS Feature Film Flops

SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM: Sources gave me these Saturday early numbers:

Top 10 For Friday and Saturday and weekend (w/ Sunday estimates)
1. Avatar (Fox) Week 6 [3,141 Theaters]
Friday $9.1M (-12%), Saturday $16.3M (-5%), Wkd $35M, Est Cume $552M
2. Legion (Sony) NEW [2,476 Theaters]
Friday $6.7M, Saturday $7.0M, Wkd $18M
3. Book of Eli (Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,111 Theaters]
Friday $5.0M (-57), Saturday $7.7M, Wkd $17M, Est Cume $62M.
4. The Tooth Fairy (Fox) NEW [3,344 Theaters]
Friday $3.8M, Saturday $6.4M, Wkd $13.7M
5. Lovely Bones (Paramount) Week 7 [2,571 Theaters]
Friday $2.8M, Saturday $3.8M, Wkd $8.5M, Est Cume $31.3M
6. Sherlock Holmes (Warner Bros) Week 5 [2,670 Theaters]
Friday $1.9M, Saturday $3.2M, Wkd $7M, Est Cume $191.5M
7. Extraordinary Measures (CBS Films) NEW [2,549 Theaters]
Friday $2.1M, Saturday $2.8M, Wkd $7M
8. Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (Fox) Week 5 [2,973 Theaters]
Friday $1.4M, Est Wkd $6.5M, Est Cume $204.2M
9. It's Complicated (Universal) Week 5 [2,301 Theaters]
Friday $1.7M, Saturday $2.7M, Wkd $6M, Est Cume $98.5M
10. The Blind Side (Warner Bros) Week 10 [1,932 Theaters]
Friday $1.2M, Saturday $1.9M, Wkd $4M, Est Cume $233.5M

loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-57347972013396147312010-01-24T00:49:00.001-08:002010-01-24T00:49:50.712-08:00Harrison Ford Talks Extraordinary Measures
Harrison Ford was out on the red carpet Tuesday night for the premiere of his latest film, Extraordinary Measures, at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. While on his way to the screening, Ford chatted with Comingsoon.net a bit about the film.

"It's a positive humor story about somebody that overcame great obstacles in their life and made a difference in the fate of their children. It's the kind of story that people can go to see and feel good about spending their time... something they can walk out of the theatre and remember rather than a series of car crashes and kinetic events. It's a good positive human story and it's an entertaining couple of hours," Ford said.

The film focuses on the story of John and Aileen Crowley, who go to extreme lengths to find a cure for their children when it is discovered that they have been diagnosed with a terminal disease. Ford plays Dr. Robert Stonehill, the man the Crowleys turn to for help in the film.

"I was looking to make a part for myself that would add to the drama of the film overall and that was the responsibility I felt towards the creation of that character," said Ford of the frequently crotchety Stonehill.

Catch Extraordinary Measures in theaters this Friday, and watch the Extraordinary Measures trailer in our gallery!
loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-88278886143256608632010-01-24T00:47:00.000-08:002010-01-24T00:51:10.909-08:00'Inglourious Basterds' wins SAG film award (AP)

<img src="http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20100124/capt.b9a8b45378b7492d9b41af00c5c311b4.screen_actors_guild_awards_show_cakj145.jpg" alt="Alec Baldwin accepts the best actor in a comedy series award at the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, in Los Angeles. But the groundbreaking sci-fi film remains a strong best-picture contender for the Oscars in March.

For Bridges of "Crazy Heart," Bullock of "The Blind Side" and for SAG supporting-acting honorees Mo'Nique of "Precious" and Christoph Walt of "Inglourious Basterds," there's reason to suspect the Oscar ceremony will be a happy rerun of Saturday's SAG Awards and last Sunday's Golden Globes.

All four were recognized at the Globes, as well, while "Avatar" was named best drama and Cameron won as best director.

He will face competition from director Quentin Tarantino, whose "Inglourious Basterds" won the SAG Award for best ensemble performance, which can be a precursor to the top Oscar award. Last year, SAG's movie cast award was presented to "Slumdog Millionaire," which went on to win the best picture Oscar.

"It was an honor to be part of it, Quentin," "Inglourious Basterds" cast member Eli Roth said in accepting the award for his fellow actors in the off-kilter World War II revenge saga.

Bullock declined — strenuously — to look ahead.

"Shhhhh. She won for her portrayal of a tenacious real-life mom, Leigh Anne Tuohy, who helped a youth in need, future American football player Michael Oher.

"I would be a hostess or a waitress or a house restorer before I ever considered myself an actor, because I never thought I was good enough," she added.

Although respected by his peers, Bridges has largely been bypassed for major awards.

"I love being an actor — pretending to be other people and getting into the shoes of other folks," said Bridges, who plays a hard-luck, hard-living country singer in "Crazy Heart."

Waltz was honored for his role as an enthusiastically ruthless Nazi. Mo'Nique's trophy came for her searing portrayal of an abusive mother in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' By Sapphire."

On the TV side of the SAG Awards, the cast of AMC's 1960s Madison Avenue saga "Mad Men" won the trophy for best drama series ensemble for the second year in a row, while 19 cast members of Fox TV newcomer "Glee," about misfits in a high school singing club, accepted the award for best comedy series ensemble.

"Glee" claimed the best comedy series award at the Golden Globes.

Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey of NBC's "30 Rock" won for best acting in a comedy series, allowing Fey to get in a sly joke about NBC and its bitter late-night battle with Conan O'Brien in her acceptance speech.

"I just wanted to take a moment to say to everyone at NBC, we are very happy with everything, and happy to be there," she said. It makes sense, since the show's recurring characters can quickly become hugely popular and instantly recognizable. Still, a concept that is hilarious in a three-minute long skit doesn't always hold up when it's stretched out to an hour and a half.

But while SNL has spawned more than its share of cinematic trainwrecks -- "It's Pat," "Superstar," "The Ladies Man," and "A Night at the Roxbury" are the chief offenders -- it has also been the starting point for some truly funny flicks. The movie is not only wildly funny with some of the best car chases ever filmed, but it also preserves some wonderful performances by music legends like James Brown, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and John Lee Hooker.

Wayne's World (1992)
After Mike Myers and Dana Carvey helped revitalize SNL in the early '90s, it was only logical to bring their signature characters to the big screen. However, costars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are not expected to return.

The film's story is loosely based on the 1987 pirate novel, "On Stranger Tides" by award-winning fantasy author Tim Powers. The book tells the story of a young man -- coincidentally named "Jack" -- who is captured by the pirate Blackbeard and forced to join in the search for the Fountain of Youth.

Ted Elliott, the co-writer of the first three "Pirates" movies, said that the story of the novel just happened to align with where they wanted to take the fourth film. He told Empire magazine, "We wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth, and Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth... it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book."

Johnny Depp signed on to appear in the fourth movie in 2008, before there was a script. It was announced at the same time he would also be playing Tonto in a film version of "The Lone Ranger," but that project has been delayed until after "Pirates" is finished.

Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have both said they had no desire to return for a fourth movie. Knightley said in an interview, "It was a completely fantastic experience, and it was an amazingly large portion of my life, but I don't think I need to go there again. I think that it's done." Also, the director of the original trilogy, Gore Verbinski, will not be coming back. He is being replaced by Rob Marshall, the director of "Chicago" and "Nine."

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is scheduled to dock into movie theaters on May 20th, 2011. Johnny Depp will next be seen as the Mad Hatter in director Tim Burton's new version "Alice in Wonderland" coming this March. Now in 3-D!

Sources at MarketSaw are reporting that Ivan Reitman's third installment of the Ghostbusters franchise is proceeding as planned... but in 3-D!

Clearly, Avatar has tipped the scales when it comes to stereoscopic filmed entertainment, and every other studio in town is clamoring to catch up to what James Cameron has done. Every major studio seems to be picking up on the 3-D releases, from Disney's Alice in Wonderland and Tron Legacy, to Sony's new Spider-Man reboot. Many studios are making last-minute choices to convert or add 3-D to some of their more immediate releases, like Warner Bros. with Clash of the Titans.

Either way, this isn't an official announcement, but you can probably put money down that we'll see our favorite paranormal investigators in 3-D. It just makes sense, what with all the slimers and marshmallow men.

loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-45678990677684951252010-01-24T00:39:00.001-08:002010-01-24T00:39:32.554-08:00Driector Joseph Kosinski Talks Tron Legacy
We won't be seeing Tron Legacy in theaters until December, and director Joseph Kosinski recently talked to MTV about why this is.

"I'm about two and a half years in on this, with about another year still to go. We still have a tremendous amount of work still to do, because there are a lot of visual effects on a movie like this, and we're also doing it in 3-D, which doubles up everything."

"Our approach is not like "Avatar," which I think is 3-D from the first shot to the last. Ours is sort of a "Wizard of Oz" approach. Ninety-eight percent of the 3-D is in the world of "Tron." The 3-D really starts once we get into the Tron world"

Kosinski did note that Tron Legacy used a newer version of the virtual camera system developed for Cameron's Avatar to capture performances in the digital realm, and that the Comic-Con teaser footage, while exceptionally cool, will not appear in the film.

"The teaser, at least tonally, represented the direction I wanted to take it. That sequence actually doesn't appear in our film at all. It represents a period of time before our film begins. We were able to refine the design of the light cycles, the characters, the world and kind of flesh it out to a much higher level of detail than we were able to do for the test," Kosinski said.

"What we're going to see in the film will feel a lot more photorealistic. They did that test with eight or 10 people in a matter of months. We have thousands of people working on the film. It's a whole different scale."
loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-39847327157978720862010-01-24T00:30:00.000-08:002010-01-24T00:37:36.768-08:00The New Spiderman : The New Director After Sam Raimi decided to not sit in the director chair for Spiderman 4 which is said there is a difference of opinion with the Sony Pictures, is now question that arises now is who will refine this movie? The site says that Peter Chernin has come on board to produce the film, code-named "Caesar."

Scott Frank (Minority Report) was previously attached to write and direct for producer Scott Rudin. The studio has now hired writer Jamie Moss (Street Kings) to rework Frank's version, and the original writers, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, were recently brought back to polish the dialogue.

According to Vulture, Frank's script "showed how genetic experiments on apes led to their evolutionary eclipse of humans. 'Caesar' refers to the genetically altered leader of the simian rebellion, so dubbed because the ape was capable of grand strategic thinking on par with Julius Caesar. The 'Caesar' code name also foreshadowed the script's plot: Like the actual Julius Caesar, the ape begins a (wait for it ... ) guerrilla war and emerges the emperor of the known world."

The studio, however, wanted to pursue a different take than Frank, and the writer/director was unwilling to change direction. A new director is expected to be hired soon.

What's interesting is that Chernin, after he became head of Fox Filmed Entertainment in 1992, tried to revive the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. He hired Oliver Stone to executive produce a Return of the Apes film that would center on a geneticist (Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered) who time-travels back to the Paleolithic Era, where he must help humans win a war against highly evolved apes and protect a young girl whose genes will ultimately save mankind from a plague.loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-8944300247508970422010-01-24T00:18:00.001-08:002010-01-24T00:18:47.969-08:00Districk-9

"The Boldest, Most Thrilling Jolt of Pure Adrenalin you’ll Experience" * * * * * THE TIMES

From Academy Award®-Winning Producer Peter Jackson And Rising Star Director Neill Blomkamp, Comes the $199+ Million Global Box-Office Smash The Action-Packed, Critically-Acclaimed Sci-Fi Thriller Debuts on Blu-ray Disc™ and DVD on December 28, 2009

Blu-ray Features include movieIQ and “Joburg from Above” Interactive Map

From producer Peter Jackson (King Kong, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) comes the critically-acclaimed sci-fi thriller District 9, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD on the 28th December, 2009 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Director Neill Blomkamp (Crossing the Line, Tempbot) enlists a cast of relative newcomers, including Sharlto Copley and Jason Cope (Doomsday), and a host of groundbreaking special effects for the enthralling allegorical story of aliens stranded in South Africa.

Bonus materials on the Blu-ray™ and DVD include commentary with Director/Co-Writer Neill Blomkamp, deleted scenes and the three-part documentary “The Alien Agenda: A Filmmaker's Log.” The first part of the documentary explores the pre-production process and creation of the world of District 9, Peter Jackson’s role in producing the film, and the unorthodox approach to using South Africa as the setting for this film. The second part delves into the shooting style of the film utilizing small handheld cameras to tell the tale, the difficulties of shooting in Johannesburg, the challenges of shooting scenes that would include visual effects later in the process, and the overall challenges encountered during the production process. The third chapter of the documentary investigates the task of designing and editing the film's sound effects, and the general challenges encountered during the editing process.

The Blu-ray versions also exclusively features four featurettes: “Metamorphosis: The Transformation of Wikus” looks at the practical effects employed by filmmaker Blomkamp and the artists at WETA to create Wikus’ metamorphosis into an alien; “Innovation: The Acting and Improvisation of District 9” shows Blomkamp’s direction of the actors, his encouragement of improvisation, and the actors’ process for working together under these guidelines; “Conception and Design: Creating the World of District 9” depicts the amazing design and theory behind the world of District 9, including Alien Design, Alien Technology, Space Travel, MNU and The First Reaction Force Battalion; and “Alien Generation: The Visual Effects of District 9” offers an in-depth look at the process of shooting visual effects scenes and incorporating CGI aliens realistically into the scenes in post-production.

Bonus features exclusive to the Blu-ray Disc™ include the Interactive Map feature “Joburg from Above: Satellite and Schematics of the World of District 9,” that allows users to explore alien technology and weaponry, MNU mercenary armory, and more from the film through a series of satellite maps, schematics and photo-real files.

The Blu-ray Disc also exclusively features movieIQ—which allows viewers to immediately access continuously updated information on the cast & crew and explore relevant trivia such as production facts, music and soundtrack information all tied to scenes within the movie via BD-Live™—and cinechat, where viewers can send on-screen instant messages to their friends while watching the movie.

SYNOPSIS:

From producer Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and director Neill Blomkamp comes a startlingly original science fiction thriller that "soars on the imagination of its creators" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). But he can't resists the lure of one last case with Holmes, especially since, in his capacity as a surgeon, he's already involved. After declaring the executed Lord Blackwood dead, he learns that the villain has apparently risen from the grave to commit new murders.

Meanwhile, Irene Adler (<a onclick="'s_objectID="" class="name" href="http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/celebs/c115554_Rachel_McAdams.html">Rachel McAdams), well-known to Holmes fans as the only woman capable of outwitting their generally misogynist hero, returns to town with an agenda of her own, in the service of a mysterious malefactor who strongly resembles DC Comics' Gentleman Ghost. This puts her in conflict with both Holmes and Blackwood—or perhaps in a position to play both sides.

It's a story with more potential than your typical big-event, action-hero movie, but unfortunately the way it plays out is less than satisfactory. Practically every scene resolves the dilemmas of the previous one by suddenly introducing brand-new characters and the discovery of yet another hitherto unknown potion that caused whatever mysterious thing it was that happened last.

At one point, Blackwood even utilizes a death trap straight out of the Saw movies! (No kidding—you'll know it when you see it).

Not to mention, the danger of turning Holmes into a master of ass kicking in addition to being a genius somehow takes the suspense out of things. The only person who seems to be a danger to him is himself, and this is probably the principal reason Downey was given the role.

There's nothing wrong with this Holmes that a good story couldn't fix, and plenty of those already exist; chances are few of the moviegoers this is aimed at are intimately familiar with the original Doyle books, so why not actually adapt one properly?

The 180—a Second Opinion: As an oversized henchman, 7-foot former wrestler Robert Maillet (aka "Kurrgan") shows some potential. If they ever sequelize or remake The Princess Bride, he'd be a worthy successor to Andre the Giant.
loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-10363665243323586312010-01-23T23:30:00.000-08:002010-01-23T23:31:18.106-08:00Review: Move Away from The Spy Next Door
 Colleen Hayes/Lionsgate

C-

Review in a Hurry: Someone must have told <a onclick="'s_objectID="" class="name" href="http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/celebs/c111851_Jackie_Chan.html">Jackie Chan that part of being a Hollywood action star is that you eventually have to do a family movie in which precocious kids make you appear totally hapless. Somebody evidently forgot to inform him that you should probably hold out for one that's better than this.

The Bigger Picture: Never mind Chan, this is a comedown for even director Brian Levant, who's no noob in the sucky filmography department (Snow Dogs, Problem Child 2). Levant's smart enough to open with a montage of footage from some of Chan's older films, thereby trading on audience goodwill for a moment or two. But then the real movie begins, and it depicts our hero (who's named Bob Ho, tee hee) as a spy living in a suburban secret identity, under Clark Kent glasses and dorky façade. He has a romance going with single-mom-next-door Gillian (Amber Valletta), but her kids hate him.

Things get wacky when Gillian has to leave town and Bob volunteers to watch the kids. They prove a handful, so Bob installs surveillance equipment and spy weaponry to keep them in line. Charming. Don't try this at home, parents.

When Levant actually has the sense to pull back the camera and just let Chan be Chan for a few fight sequences, The Spy Next Door manages to entertain well enough, even if some of these moments are rather blatant—and pale—imitations of his signature moves from older movies. And as lame as the kid stuff is, at least obvious gross-out humor is eschewed.

Still, when it comes to American partners for Chan, we've gone from <a onclick="'s_objectID="" class="name" href="http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/celebs/c109520_Chris_Tucker.html">Chris Tucker to <a onclick="'s_objectID="" class="name" href="http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/celebs/c115120_Owen_Wilson.html">Owen Wilson to Billy Ray Cyrus in a hairdo that resembles "the Rachel," circa 1994? He's not terrible, but considering that his character hates being caricatured as a hick, it seems ironic that all he gets to do is spin faux-country witticisms like, "He's so twisted he could eat nails and poop corkscrews."

If you're a religious fundamentalist with a curiosity about martial arts but a nagging fear that such movies are family unfriendly, you are the target demographic. Otherwise, literally anything else starring Chan is a better bet.

The 180—a Second Opinion: Brooding 13-year-old Madeline Carroll (Resident Evil: Extinction) may have a decent future in acting if she can get some better projects.
loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-50965945601456219492010-01-23T23:29:00.001-08:002010-01-23T23:30:26.861-08:00Review: The Tooth Fairy Not Painful, but Lacks Bite
 20th Century Fox

C

Review in a Hurry: It smells like The Rock is cooking a warmed-over Game Plan, as <a onclick="'s_objectID="" class="name" href="http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/celebs/c110549_Dwayne_Johnson.html">Dwayne Johnson plays a second-rate hockey player working night shifts as an actual tooth fairy and managing a suspicious girlfriend (<a onclick="'s_objectID="" class="name" href="http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/celebs/c108554_Ashley_Judd.html">Ashley Judd) and her kids. Here's a regular Joe who doesn't "believe," and he finds himself in over his head in a world of children's fantasy. Sure, The Rock is more macho than <a onclick="'s_objectID="" class="name" href="http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/celebs/c116821_Tim_Allen.html">Tim Allen, but aside from a few bouts on the ice, Derek (Johnson) doesn't engage in a whole lot of ass kickin'.

Derek's stint as a tooth fairy, see, is punishment for discouraging his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter's dreams of getting moola for a loose baby tooth. And as a magical temp, he's gotta enter a sleeping child's room, grab the tooth and leave a buck. You know how it works, but a seemingly endless amount of gadgetry is on display: The molar snatchers have access to potions that make you small, keeps household pets away and just in case a kid does see you, "amnesia" dust.

This leads to such gags as Derek shrinking down to action-figure size, jumping on a finger skateboard and leaping over a cat. (Wouldn't be surprised if a take with The Rock yelling, "Cowabunga, dude!" that was left on the cutting room floor.)

The story of a hockey grump who learns the meaning of fairy-ness is strictly by the numbers, and for a while, thanks to a strong supporting cast, that's enough. As I write this, the film's premiere is getting underway in London and the first press screenings are letting out. The London critics had to sign a piece of paper promising not to review the film until Monday, but with so many screenings here in the states, it's a bit sketchy as to what precautions are being taken here. Needless to say, reactions are beginning to pour onto the web. Will Avatar really change the way we watch movies? Let's take a look ...

"... the terrible film that some had been anticipating had not materialised. It was good ... There is, though, a certain amount of suspension of disbelief needed when watching Avatar. Cynics might sneer at the plot ... There is more shock and awe in this movie than almost any other." - The Guardian

"Everything feels real. It's as if Cameron has happened upon this alien world and got his camera out ... It is overwhelming, and that is because you are emotionally tied up in the characters and the story ... James Cameron has described his new filming process as "emotion capture". And it's a boast he lives up to." -- The Sun

One critic who wished to remain anonymous for now: "Was not as thrilled by Avatar as my colleagues; eye-popping visuals, but story is Dances w/Wolves + District 9; I preferred District 9."

From Twitter:

@petershall: "The AVATAR buzz is an understatement. But here goes: Pixar has done it again. The 10th film off the animation powerhouse's assembly line, Up is a lighter-than-air fable about a crotchety old widower (Ed Asner in gruff Lou Grant mode) who floats to South America in a rickety house tethered to thousands of balloons, with a chubby little stowaway along for the ride. Like most Pixar features, the setup is the best part. But really, that's splitting hairs — the entire movie's a gem. EXTRAS include a wonderfully nerdy commentary from directors Pete Docter and Bob Peterson, and a new original short starring Dug, Up's lovably dumb mutt. A-loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-84278077070995183172009-11-24T16:47:00.002-08:002009-11-24T16:48:34.981-08:00Movie Review The Road (2009)

Here's a tip: If you see one austerely hopeless movie this year about a father and son wandering through a junk-strewn postapocalyptic wilderness as they struggle to fight off demons of fear, madness, and starvation, not to mention roving bands of cannibalistic killers, then by all means make that movie The Road. In this adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's revered 2006 novel, Viggo Morten-sen, caked in grime, plays the father with a fierce physicality and tremulous woundedness. The film has one other thing going for it: Visually, it's one of the most spookily convincing, least ''movieish'' visions of a bombed-out wasteland future I've ever seen. (It's never stated that there was a nuclear war, a meteor, or whatever, but there's an ashy deadness to everything on screen.) The wreckage and twisted clutter, some of it spectacular, doesn't seem as if it was planted there by a set designer; it's an organic part of the landscape. This debris has integrity, almost the way the ruined city in Full Metal Jacket did.

Yet The Road, for all its vivid desolation, remains a curiously unmoving experience — or maybe not so curious, given that nothing really happens in it. In the novel, McCarthy played off postapocalyptic Hollywood thrillers, and so he gave you the heady feeling that you were seeing a movie unfold on the page. Yet he brought off that feat without much action; the backdrop was grand, the emotions interior and refined. That's a problem when The Road is done as a movie: It's like a zombie thriller drowning in tastefully severe art-house gloom. The darkest note in the story — it's what no conventional sci-fi blockbuster would dare to include — is the Mortensen character's despairing realization that he must be prepared at any moment to fire a bullet into his beloved son should they be captured, since the bandits who roam the land would rape and kill the boy if he didn't. That's a haunting thing to live with, and saucer-eyed Kodi Smit-McPhee plays the son with touching half-aware innocence. But that's not enough to save the movie from its creeping inertness.

The Road was originally set to come out last year, and in one sense the decision to delay its release was karmically right, since (like 2012) it addresses the current mood of nerve-jangling anxiety and doom. Yet the timing also works against the film. There's enough foreboding in America right now to make sitting through a movie such as The Road seem like one more heavy burden that, frankly, no one needs. B-

loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-84400093618191257382009-11-24T16:47:00.001-08:002009-11-24T16:47:47.484-08:00DVD Review Star Trek (2009)
<img src="http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/091111/star_trek_pine_quinto_l.jpg" alt=" RISKY ENTERPRISE? Bale is the youngest in a family of 3 older sisters (Erin, Sharon, and Louise Bale).
IMDb Mini Biography By: Harrison Cheung <>

Spouse

Sibi Blazic

(29 January 2000 - present) 1 child

Trade Mark

Often portrays obsessive characters.

Trivia

Hand-picked by director/writer Mary Harron and author Bret Easton Ellis to star in American Psycho (2000). I was almost crying in interviews and running away during press conferences, pretending I was going to the bathroom and just disappearing.

[on the sudden fame that resulted after Empire of the Sun (1987)] I enjoyed making the film, but I was shocked when I received all the attention when I got home to Bournemouth. Girls were all over me, boys wanted to fight me, and I was being asked to open local fêtes when all I wanted to do was ride my BMX bike in the woods. I told my parents I wasn't interested in doing anything again because the attention ruined it.

I don't want to know about the lives of other actors and I don't want people to know too much about me. If we don't know about the private lives of other actors, that leaves us as clean slates when it comes to playing characters. That's the point, they can create these other characters and I can believe them. I think if you're a good enough actor, that's the way to longevity in the film business. Keep everybody guessing.

I started my career without fans.

[on his 63-pound weight loss for "The Machinist" (El maquinista (2004))] I had a stupid kind of feeling of invincibility, like, "I can do it, I can manage it". I really did feel like I hit this point of enlightenment.

I always like that. Whenever there's a project where everyone's going, "Oooooh, it's a bit dodgy", I always like it. If you actually look at it, there tends not to be anything risky at all. Why did I start acting in the first place? I didn't do it to be mediocre or to please everybody all the time.

I'd love to remain a secret and still work, but I also want people to see the movies I'm in and get a higher profile because of that. I like to think that as long as you continue choosing diverse roles, you can avoid becoming predictable.

It's the actors who are prepared to make fools of themselves who are usually the ones who come to mean something to the audience.

[on his transformation into Patrick Bateman for American Psycho (2000)] The character is so vain and obsessed with his looks. While the psychology of the character was something that I could perform, you can't fake the physicality. Being English, I tend to enjoy going down to the pub far more than going to the gym, so it was very unnatural for me. I just had to convince myself that I loved it, which was the most difficult thing about playing this part. Working out is incredibly boring. I swear it's true that the bigger your muscles get, the fewer brain cells you have. I found I had to stop thinking when I was in the gym because if I thought about it, I'd realize how ridiculous it was that I was pumping iron when I could've been out having a drink and a cigarette and enjoying some lunch. I did three hours a day for six weeks with a personal trainer and some time before that. I ate an awful lot during training and then almost nothing during filming.

The only thing that I'm obsessed with is sleeping and, actually, it is more than an obsession, it is a pleasure. I love sleeping so much that I could do it 12 hours a day if I didn't have to turn on the alarm clock . . . and still, sometimes . . .

Our Batman [Batman Begins (2005)] is centered on the early days. It's an explanation. It's certainly not Batman No. 5. It's a reinvention. We want you to forget there has ever been a Batman before this one.

[on Batman Begins (2005)] I've never felt like the Batman character in the films was given as much time as any of the villains. The villains were always the most interesting characters, too. Batman has always been this very bizarre, almost blind character running through the middle of the story. Our film is different.

[on Batman Begins (2005)] I contacted them. I heard they were doing some low-budget Batman not aimed at kids and I was tantalized. I had appreciated the Batman movies, but I wasn't really a fan and I didn't know the TV series. But I read some of the graphic novels, and they were very dark and very interesting.

I spent about three weeks in Chicago last July doing night shoots [for Batman Begins (2005)]. It's a great city, but the humidity was tough under the Batsuit. Uh, it got a little bad. It's hot enough in the Batsuit, let alone in the Chicago heat.

I needed money because I had just bought a house, but I just kept saying, "I really can't do another movie that I know is not going to turn out the way I want it to, and that I have to make a lot of concessions in my head for".

For me, there's a bigger risk trying ['Batman Begins (2005)_]. Ultimately, the big point was that [Christopher Nolan], who you would not expect to be doing that kind of movie, was going to direct it, which is exactly what I was looking for, because you want to do something totally different from the other Batman movies. I always thought there could be a really good movie made about Batman and when I heard that Chris was doing it I thought, "Well, he's not a director that you would expect, therefore you're going to get the unexpected from him". I think there's a great potential for going very dark with it, it's a fascinating character, very complex psychologically, which I've never seen done. You know, you have the two extremes, which are both very good. You can either go the very camp Adam West TV series thing ["Batman" (1966)], which was great in its own way, or you can go more the way of the graphic "Dark Knight" novels which delve somewhat deeper.

I had spent weeks staring at the wall in my house out of depression because of things that had gone wrong and the choices I had made. When I read "The Machinist" [El maquinista (2004)], I just went, "Wow! This is perfect". I was having dreams about the character and I couldn't stop thinking about it. I felt like this one was going to save my arse, and pull me out of the depressed state I had got into.

I did other things, but my heart was never in it. A lot of actors say that theater's the thing for them. And that's great, and I'm not one to speak with any authority about it because of not having done it properly. For me, movies are what I love.

At first, I was somewhat hesitant to do the role [Batman Begins (2005)]. I mean, after all, Batman is an icon. But I remember, as clear as day, being at the grocery store the day the movie opened, and this little boy saw me. He couldn't have been more than five years old. He just walked right up to me and hugged me. He hugged me, and I was so moved by it that I hugged him back. Then he looked up at me and said, "You're my hero." And in that moment, I knew that not only as an actor that I had done my job, but that I had made the right decision to play Batman. And I've never looked back on my the decision to play Batman since.

[on playing Batman] You couldn't pull it off unless you became a beast inside that suit.

I only sound intelligent when there's a good scriptwriter around.

I'm English. Our dentistry is not world famous. But I made sure I got moldings of my old teeth beforehand because I miss them.

I don't think I'm like any of the characters I've played. They're all really far from who I am.

You can't help but find that violence is endlessly fascinating--and I mean true violence, not action-movie violence, just because it is used as the answer to so many problems. We're all taught as kids not to be violent, but you can't help but also see that violence is what works very often. Bullies thrive.

I think there's a kind of pretentiousness to the idea that serious work is only found in low-budget independent movies--I can't stand that snobbery.

I like being kept in the dark myself. You know, like mushrooms: Keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em shit. See, I think that's an enjoyable vegetable to be.

At the time that [Christopher Nolan] asked me to do it [Batman Begins (2005)] I actually couldn't do one push-up. They sent me to a trainer, who was having to hold my T-shirt at the back just to pull me up. I've come a long way from that.

[on filming Batman films during the summer] I'm not really looking forward to wearing a black rubber suit in the summertime in humid Chicago. If you see a pool of sweat through the city, follow it and you will find me.

[describing director Christopher Nolan's method for filming Batman Begins (2005)] We tend to shoot at night like some kind of covert operation. So, we have minimal people actually seeing me in that way.

[on being asked if he knew how big a flop Newsies (1992) was] You say something bad about "Newsies" and you have an awful lot of people to answer to.

He's a messed-up individual, as well. He's got all sorts of issues. He's just as twisted and messed-up as the villains he's fighting, and that's part of the beauty of the whole story. - on the character of Batman

(2007 - On his career) I've been able to work on movies that I like very much in the past few years, which I think have turned out how I had hoped that they would. And, I'm human, you know; that makes me feel good. I like it when people like what I do. I don't like it when people are laughing at me for what I do, you know? I mean, I'd love to say I was completely impervious to anybody's opinion, but that just ain't the truth. Of course, it matters. At the same time, there's also a danger when you start playing it too safe. After all, what am I paid to do? I'm paid to essentially make an ass out of myself, if needed. And occasionally, in doing that, you're going to fall flat on your face. But, I have learned, through doing that numerous times in my life, that there's also a ton of enjoyment to what other people see as humiliation. You can actually come to sort of thrive on that, because in a way, it kind of leads to a sort of fearlessness, if you genuinely don't mind. If the point is that you tried, I think that really is the most important thing. And, like you said, I feel like I've been very fortunate in the last couple of years that I've gotten to do what I loved, which is actually the making of movies, and on top of that, if I've liked how the movies have turned out themselves, then that's fantastic. But, to start getting too comfortable within that would be eventually to start churning out boring, boring chaff.

I'm accustomed to not having any map for my life. I'd be reaching for an Uzi if I knew what was going to happen every day. If anybody tells me I shouldn't jump, of course all I want to do is jump and show it can be done.

Life is not stable. There is a great strength that comes from not being shocked or scared by upheavals.

I don't think I was particularly in need of superheroes. I never had any fascination with Superman or Spider-Man or a Batman kind of character. If it happened at all, it was imagined characters that I had invented. My dad was a role model for me. He was a fascinating man. There was intrigue and entertainment growing up with him. He gave me an edict that I still pursue: "Life should never be boring."

[on meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger in a car park] He's got bodyguards and they were all shouting at me and I was going, 'Hold on, hold on, I've met him before!' but they were getting very worried as I walked toward him. But we chatted a bit. He had questions about Terminator Salvation (2009), he didn't know the script at all but I hear apparently he's now seen the movie... I'll wait to hear what his reaction is...

Variety is essential for me. I love watching a Michael Mann movie. I love watching a Christopher Nolan movie. Just to talk about my stuff, I enjoy a El maquinista (2004) kind of movie, a Rescue Dawn (2006), a 3:10 to Yuma (2007), an American Psycho (2000), whatever. I had dinner with his family a couple of nights before the awards and liked very much they were the people who were picking it up for him. Of course I was really delighted that it did go that way.

I'm actually someone that's very anti the whole B-Rolls, DVD extras and stuff like that. I'm a wonderful guy and I have a lovely smile and how can you not like me?' - on his infamous onset rant on Terminator Salvation (2009)

[on his infamous on-set rant on Terminator Salvation (2009)] It wouldn't have happened if we hadn't been playing that scene, for Christ's sake, between John Connor and his wife, which is probably the most intense one in the movie...I'd definitely say that that guy who was yelling was at least half John Connor, and the rest was Christian Bale.

Look, I hate to throw people under the bus for making movies I don't think are very good. But for Terminator Salvation (2009) to be considered with any legitimacy, you have to throw number three [Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)] under the bus. It began to spoof the whole thing. To me, that was a sign that the franchise was dead, the mythology was finished.

[on Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)] I really liked the second one. It had as much to do with the electric atmosphere in the theater when I saw it at 17, when I was first getting out to the States, and I'd never been in a movie theater that had that much noise and excitement throughout the entire movie.

[on starting a new trilogy with Terminator Salvation (2009)] I hope that it will be a really fun, great movie trilogy if this one takes off and that we get to do a second or third, with me or not, whatever the scenario is. I think there is actually - in the hands of the right people - a real revival for this and an extension to an already good mythology.

I was up in Toronto and went to see that movie Life Is Beautiful. By myself. And when I came out, I had a craving for blood unlike anything I had ever experienced since I decided to go vegetarian at the age of 7. It was a compulsion. It was undeniable. I went to several restaurants, one right after the other, and got the biggest, bloodiest steaks I could get my hands on. It was the first time I had tasted flesh in almost twenty years.

Where Are They Now

(August 2003) Filming El maquinista (2004) in Spain.

(March 2004) Filming Batman Begins (2005) in London, England.

(August 2005) Thailand (Filming Rescue Dawn (2006)).

(2006) New Mexico - filming 3:10 to Yuma (2007).

(August 2007) Filming the Batman Begins (2005) sequel, The Dark Knight (2008).

(May 2008) In Wisconsin - filming Public Enemies (2009).

(July 2008) Filming 'Terminator Salvation' in New Mexico
loephihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12922937824962285275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2230283092918166551.post-56585777700598945912009-11-24T16:38:00.000-08:002009-11-24T16:44:36.613-08:00Biography for Kristen Stewart

Date of Birth
9 April 1990, Los Angeles, California, USA

Birth Name
Kristen Jaymes Stewart

Nickname
Kris
KStew

Height
5' 5" (1.65 m)

Trivia

Has an older brother named Cameron and two adopted brothers named Dana and Taylor. It's bigger than huge'. I was kind of freaked out at first".

(about her love for acting) I love it because I love to tell stories. I like being in movies that have a great story. I'm not so interested in being a Hollywood star. It's a job, you know. When you wake up at six in the morning every day for a week, it feels like hard work.

I don't want to make movies for kids, and I don't want to make movies for adults either.

Acting is such a personal thing, which is weird because at the same time it's not. It's for the consumption of other people. But in terms of creative outlets and expressing yourself, it's just the most extreme version of that that I've ever found. It's like running, it's exertion. When you reach that point where you can't go anymore and you stop and you take a breath, it's that same sort of clearing of the mind.

A lot of actors think that what we do is so important, like we're saving people's lives or something.

All I try to do in the press is be honest about something that I really care about.

I've always had an aversion to looking sexy, but I've grown out of it.

I start everything from the same place, with that sense of responsibility. On a bigger movie, you have to be aware that you can only control your aspect of the film. It's nice to be on a smaller movie because you're working with your friends and you feel so close-knit. It's your movie and you can do anything you want, and nobody's going to have anything to say. With a bigger movie, it concerns so many people. It's so much more of a process. But, in terms of what I do personally, it has to be the same, or else I'm just on some big movie, being a liar, and I can't do that.

Really, I'm incredibly disjointed and not candid. Just in general, my thoughts tend to come out in little spurts that don't necessarily connect. If you hang around long enough, you can find the linear path. But it will take a second. That is why these interviews never go well for me.

About having an aha moment when it came to pursuing an acting career: I have the "Aha" moments progressively -- they're like milestones and they hit you. I think my first "Aha!" moment was when I did this (TV) movie called "Speak." I was just rolling with it, and ended up kind of really losing myself in it, so that I felt like I was a different person at the end. That was a big moment.

You should have the opportunity to be more than one person with different people - because you have that within you. It's not like you're faking it. If everyone knows you so well and can always get a hold of you, then you're stuck to this thing that people think you are. You should have the opportunity to reinvent yourself. Because you do. Naturally.

On whether she wants to develop her skills as a writer: I do want to work on writing, because writing's a skill. Writing is something that you can train yourself to know better. To know yourself better. And it's intimidating as hell. I mean, I definitely will always do what I've been doing. I've also started taking a lot of pictures, and they help the writing. The pictures help the writing. I mean, I want to make books. I want to take pictures and then write all over the pictures. And then I don't have to say a complete story, because I have the picture, and I have just a word.

About Bella in New Moon: Well, she loses what basically gives her the drive to do anything in her whole life. She loses the man she's in love with, but she also loses her entire life plan, and she's so young to have to be forced into a decision like that. It's just a glorified, elaborate version of the worst breakup you've ever been through. All of a sudden you question everything. All of a sudden you know nothing and you're dropped in the middle of a freezing cold ocean. Oddly, we have a character that's warm enough and bright enough to bring her out of that, and it's truly gut-ripping. Because as perfect as Jacob is for her, she holds on to an ideal, the ultimate fiery love that she has for Edward even though it's not comfortable, it's not practical and it's not a good idea.

This weird thing happens when you're in a movie that has some level of success. People start offering you all kinds of things, and they just expect you to do them because they'll be good for your career. It's not about the project's integrity or anything like that. It's about raising your profile and all that crap.

I was just in Botswana in Africa. I wanted to learn something about the world. I just feel really ignorant whenever I leave the country. I don't know a lot of stuff, and I really want to. I figure that traveling is a good way to start if you want knowledge. Like, if you don't know something about a country, then go and check it out. That's what I did.

On how her life has changed since Twilight: My life hasn't changed. Most circumstances I find myself in are different than they were a year ago, but I myself haven't changed...however a normal 18-year-old girl would change in a year. But it makes things so much easier. I would do it for free every day [even] if nobody saw it. I cannot describe how good it feels to actually have something that is truly into your heart and soul actually affecting people. And that's amazing. So that's the biggest change.

On whether she wants to continue making movies or go to college: I absolutely have no foresight. I used to think I had a lot when I was younger. I worked really hard in school to give myself options, and I've literally taken those options and thrown them down the toilet. Purposely - not to make that sound totally negative. It's what I want. I want to keep doing what I'm doing. It's funny, people ask me all the time: 'What do you do for fun? What do you do when you're not acting?' It's a strange thing, acting. It's a business, it's a job, everything like that. All it is, is self-reflection. You just never stop caring about people and I've never stopped doing that, so I'm sure it'll seep into other areas of my life. I want to write. I'm not going to school because I can't take the structure of it, but I'm not going to stop learning.

Usually I come in and sit down at roundtables in America and they look at me like 'what is wrong with you?' Just because I don't fit...nobody fits into the frame that typical Hollywood young actresses do, but they try to. They try to be this thing. Try to memorize answers and make everybody happy. That's so horrifying and scary to me. So when you're not that, you get criticized for it. You get criticized for being honest and criticized for being nervous. So that's kind of annoying. I do a whole day of press and then I get calls from publicity people that are like, 'you might want to be a little bit more bubbly'. And I'm like, 'no'. People get very upset in the States. It's weird. Fans of the book especially. They don't understand me. Which is fine. I guess it doesn't really matter who I am, it just matters that they like the movie.

On doing interviews: Self-evaluation is not my strong point, and you're constantly asked to critique yourself. You just spent three months on a set and your whole life is wrapped up in that - and then it's like, "Okay, define that right now in five seconds." I can't do that. I used to get so nervous that I would become a completely different person - and then they would think that was me. So I've tried to calm down, but no one's ever going to write, "Oh, she's actually just a pretty f---in' average chick who really loves what she does." That's not gonna happen.

On how fame changed her life: There's nothing you can do about it, to be honest. I don't leave my hotel room -- literally, I don't. I don't talk to anybody about my personal life, and maybe that perpetuates it, too. But it's really important to own what you own and keep it to yourself. That said, the only way for me not to have somebody know where I went the night before is if I didn't go out at all. I'm trading. It depends on what mood I'm in. Some nights, I think, 'You know what? I don't care. I'm going to do what I want to do.' Then the next day I think, 'Ugh. Now everyone thinks I'm going out to get the attention.' and I'm like, 'No, actually, for a second, thought that maybe I could be like a normal person.'

Salary

Twilight (2008/I)

$2,000,000

Where Are They Now

(October 2002) Colorado filming Cold Creek Manor (2003).

(February 2008) Just got cast for Twilight (2008/I), and getting ready to start filming.

(March 2008) Filming Twilight (2008/I).

(May 2008) Finished filming for Twilight (2008/I) on Friday, May 2nd 2008. Twelve was a turning point as I moved to a mixed school and then I became cool and discovered hair gel.

It's strange, somebody asked for my autograph the other day. Because I finished school and I'm not really doing anything at the moment, I was just kind of aimlessly wandering around London and these two guys who were about 30 came up and asked for my autograph. I was really quite proud at the time, and they wanted to take photos and stuff. And then they were sort of wandering around and I was kind of wandering around and I bumped into them about three times, and every single time their respect for me kept growing and growing and growing.

They [Barnes Theatre Club] were a very good group, and for some reason when I finished the backstage thing, I just decided to that I should try to act. So I auditioned for Guys and Dolls and got a little tiny part as some Cuban dancer or something and then in the next play I got the lead part, and then I got my agent. So I owe everything to that little club.

I aspire to be Jack Nicholson. I love his every single mannerism. I used to try and be him in virtually everything I did, I don't know why. I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) when I was about 13, and I dressed like him. I tried to do his accent. I did everything like him. I think it kind of stuck with me.

The day before [the Harry Potter London premiere] I was just sitting in Leicester Square, happily being ignored by everyone. Then suddenly strangers are screaming your name. Amazing.

I went to one of these signing conventions. [in '06] It was one of the most interesting experiences I've had. It was so strange that people would pay for autographs. You keep thinking you should do a little dance for them as well or something.

I have been playing the piano for my entire life - since I was three or four. And the guitar - I used to play classical guitar from when I was about five to 12 years of age. Then I didn't play guitar for like years. About four or five years ago, I got out the guitar again and just started playing blues and stuff. I am not very good at the guitar, but I am all right. I am in a band in London as well.

My favorite teacher was probably my English teacher because she got me into writing instead of just answering the question. I used to hand in homework with 20 pages of nonsense and she'd still mark it. She was a really amazing teacher.

I didn't want to get stuck in pretty, public school roles, or I knew I'd end up as some sort of caricature. Playing Dali has been a complete turning point for me. It's the first part I've had that has required really serious thought. I became completely obsessed with Dali during the filming, and I read every biography I could get a hold of. He was the most bizarre, complex man, but in the end I felt I could relate to him. He was basically incredibly shy.

I wasn't at all focused on school, and I didn't achieve much. But I've got a sense of urgency now.
